Congressman Trey Gowdy voted against the deal to raise the debt deal and fund the government through January 15, 2014, saying, "This agreement falls short of what we could have done and what we should have done; hence I could not support it. Nevertheless, issues related to fiscal responsibility and the systemic shortcomings of Obamacare will emerge again soon, and I trust we can be more persuasive in making our argument to the American people." Gowdy discussed the end of the government shutdown ... Read more

This week marks the 50th anniversary of National Small Business Week. Small-business owners and entrepreneurs have made significant contributions to our country, so each year since 1963, the president has issued a presidential proclamation to announce this week honoring them. We recognize small-business owners such as Hamp Lindsey, who is the owner and operator of Wade's Family Restaurant. A Spartanburg institution since 1947, Wade's Family Restaurant serves hundreds of happy customers each day... Read more

Today, Rep. Trey Gowdy (SC-4) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s press conference. “In 2013, President Obama implores Congress to raise the debt ceiling with no conversation about spending cuts, working toward a balanced budget or fiscal reforms. For those who missed the outrage he continued, “it would be a self-inflicted wound on the economy,” he said. “To even entertain the idea of this happening … is irresponsible. It's absurd.” “When President Obama was Senato... Read more

Today, Representative Trey Gowdy (SC-4) released the following statement after the United State Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The Supreme Court did redefine PPACA as a tax. “The question every American should now be asking themselves is what's next? Can Congress "tax" you for not exercising enough since that impacts the cost of healthcare? Can congress "tax" you for eating certain foods or offer "tax" breaks for avoiding certain foods? Can... Today, Representative Trey Gowdy (SC-04) released the following statement in response to last night’s State of the Union Address by President Obama. “Regrettably the President took what was supposed to be a "State of the Union" and turned it into a state of his re-election bid. It is disappointing to see someone willing to divide this country solely for the sake of his political fortunes. This is the 3rd State of the Union address the President has given and there is still no plan to save socia... Read more

Today, Representative Trey Gowdy (SC-04) released the following statement in response to the President’s decision to raise the debt limit. “Less than 6 months removed from last summer’s so called debt crisis – we are on the verge yet again of committing an act of generational embezzlement. We are on the verge of assigning another trillion dollars of debt to our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren because we cannot muster the courage to make hard decisions. We cannot bring ourselves... Read more

Today, Representative Trey Gowdy (SC-04) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s recess appointments to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) “For someone who habitually brags about being a constitutional law scholar, it is appalling how little regard President Obama has for the document. Apparently unconvinced the republic could stay knitted together long enough for the Senate to execute its constitutional respon... Read more

  • Payroll Tax Extension

Failing to extend the payroll tax holiday is wholly unacceptable, which is why we voted to extend the holiday for a full year. Businesses cannot adequately plan for the 2012 business year in 60-day increments. It would be an administrative nightmare. Nor is 2-month tax policy conducive with long-term economic recovery. The House passed plan provides a full year's worth of certainty and over $1000 in savings for the American worker. House conferees are in Washington today and will remain there w... Read more

With the legislative session lurching to a close, House Republican freshmen took center stage in the Capitol on Monday to play their part in an elaborate year-end kabuki dance over a bill to extend the payroll tax holiday. The freshman argued at a news conference and in interviews that a two-month extension approved over the weekend by the Senate, 89-10, was irresponsible because it did not provide economic certainty for middle-class Americans. South Carolina’s lawmakers need to keep the pressure on the Obama administration to ensure that labor unions cannot continue to use federal agencies such as the National Labor Relations Board as bargaining tools in labor negotiations. Words from Sen. Lindsey Graham, Rep. Trey Gowdy and others are encouraging to hear in the wake of the NLRB’s decision to drop its suit against Boeing. That decision came only after Boeing and its union reached a new labor agreement that assured jobs related to Boei... Read more
